Living in NY, I have made it my business to try to see each and every Sonny Rollins concert performed in the NY area. I saw all of the concerts with the "Young Lions" and of course they were spectacular. I have seen Sonny with McCoy Tyner. On and on, but the two that bring back the most longing memories was first a concert on the Circle Line. Besides hearing Sonny & group in all their glory, with the background of the skyline of Manhattan, the highlight was a walk on by Betty Carter. Her vocals with Sonny's obligatto's was perfect music. My last & best Sonny concert memory was from sometime from the mid 80's (?) when the Museum of Modern Art had a Jazz in the Garden series and Sonny played solo. Walking or stalking that garden, just his music, floating through the night air, chorus after chorus of invention, music from the God's. Long live Sonny.
