We saw Sonny perform last November in Scottsdale. As expected, he was AMAZING. The crowd was on its feet for standing ovations more than once, and he deserved it. When he started playing "In A Sentimental Mood" my heart raced, because that's the ONE song that I had hoped he'd play. What a beautiful job he did on it too. He even "quoted" his song "Alfie's Theme Differently" during his performance of "In A Sentimental Mood." - - It was just too cool!
But I was completely unprepared for our meeting with Sonny backstage. I was initially paralyzed by fear and excitement. But he quickly put us at ease with his friendly manner and sense of humor. We spent perhaps 45 minutes with him and, before we left, I was struck by the realization that Sonny Rollins is even more impressive as simply a human being, than he is as a musician. His humble, kind, engaging demeanor was really inspiring. Although he spent considerable time with us sharing his wisdom and knowledge about playing the saxophone... the most important lesson I learned from him that evening was "humility."
