You are a brilliant musician. Thank you for all of the expressive solos and iconic jazz compositions.
I am working on a dissertation, and I am hoping you might be willing to entertain a couple of questions about your friendship with artist Gertrude Abercrombie and her friend, author James Purdy. I would really love to hear from you.

Hey Sonny! I am a huge fan, and I've loved your music since I first got into jazz when I was a teenager living in Albuquerque.
I read in the newspaper about a year ago that there was going to be an album release (possibly a double-album) of the discovered 50 year old tape of your Carnegie Hall concert in addition to the new 50th anniversary Carnegie Hall concert with Christian McBride and Roy Haynes. I've eargerly awaited this release, but I'm not sure if it's still coming out. I saw that the recent Road Shows Vol. 1 album has one track from the 50th anniversary Carnegie Hall concert, but will the entire concert (along with the original one from 50 years ago) be released on CD in their entirety?
Sincerely and with much love and respect,
Justin David Thomas

Dear Mr. Rollins,
what a great concert in Berlin!
Specially your solo in "Sonny, please" was spectacular. You´ve played with such a physical and mental strength, energy and honesty, everything what the musicscene and the world really need.
I feel so glad and it was (and still will be) the greatest honor for me to had the chance to meet you. Thank you again for your music and your patience after such a "tour de force"-concert.
Best regards to Peter Downey, he was very kind and the members of your band and Bret Primack of course
Please relax and recover after such a heavy tour, have a good time and merry christmas!!!
All the best, lol David

Everytime he touched his saxo we were all claping ours hands. At the end we were crazy, stood up and yelling. I never thought that I could see Munich like that!

thank you so much for giving me the privilege to meet you after concert and for signing the photograph; for the rythms and the sounds from your horn, for all the beauty and love and wisdom in that sound of yours. But thank you most of all for your spiritual guidance, for being a light and a truly positive force! Please stay well, too, and hope to see you next year some place in Europe again.

Dear Sonny Rollins,
it really was a great show on Friday night in Hamburg.
I'm very sorry to read about the difficulties occuring before the concert. The responsable people seem to have a lack of respect.
Nevertheless the concert was wonderful from the beginning on.
Your whole biography and the fact, that you keep on performing at the highest level in spite of your obvious physical problems show how profound your love for music must be.
That we still have the opportunity to see you in concert is a great privilege.
Your politeness after an exhausting concert, when you signed my copy of your new CD was very impressive.
Thank you and stay well

We started off with a pretty rough day here in Hamburg. It turned out that the Philharmonic need the stage at the Musikhalle to rehearse until late into the afternoon. We couldn't start setting up our equipment until they were done and the stage was cleared. We barely had time to do a sound check. In the end it turned out to be a great show. The audience was on their feet in the end clapping in rhythm until Sonny returned for one more.

Mr Rollins,
I met you at JFK Airport and wish to apologise for not knowing who you were. You were in the Virgin lounge waiting for your flight to Brazil. I had a chat with you and asked about your Saxaphone and how long you had been playing. You told me you had been playing since you were seven years old and I said "Oh you must be pretty good by now". You replied "I'm not bad". I didn't know who you were at the time but I do now. That discussion showed me what a gentleman and real star you are by not playing the big I am and don't you know who I am thing that many of the so called stars do these days.
It was an honour to meet you and I wish you continued success for the future and look forward to listening to your music from now on.
Best Regards,
David

I wish you many more years performing on stage, and I'm proud for being recognized, in my country (Portugal), as the "portuguese Rollins" (well, just by the influence and caracteristics of my tenor sax sonority and "phraseology", because I'm very, very far even from dreaming on becoming a jazz giant, a living legend and a kind of a hero saxophonist with a major role in music and Jazz history of all-times, as Mr. Sonny Rollins is...) .
But you are so important on my saxophone player carrer nowadays, than you were 30 years ago, when I started my professional activity.

It happened on a sunny Saturday morning at Ibirapuera Park in Sao Paulo - Brazil. I was there on time!! What can I say about the concert...? fire, energy, life, history, passion, and love from that horn!! Right after the concert, the Sonny´s driver gave me the direction of the hotel... (thanks, man!!). Finally, 1 hour later, at the lobby of the hotel, I had my 5 minutes of conversation with Sonny. He asked me questions about the jazz scene in Sao Paulo and made some comments about it.... Very kind!! It was really something!!! Well, I decided not to disturb the man.. I didn´t ask him to sign the book about his life, written by Eric Nisenson; didn´t ask him for a brief interview for a national saxophone magazine... but I asked to take a picture with him... Thank you, Sonny!! God bless you!!

Hello dear Sonny, what else could I write to you than that your new album is sooooooooooooo beautiful. Have it since last Saturday and heard it for the third time this morning on my way to work. I guess I am walking about 2 kilometres every morning – an experience full of energy and emotional power hearing your 7 Road-Show-1-pieces. Each tune very different and with its very own beauty that only you can create on tenor saxophone. One really feels rescued and empowered listening to your music. Whatever rigorous judgement YOU make about your art. I LOVE IT. Hearing & looking forward to Frankfurt. Hope to meet you ) Please take care of yourself. Barbara

Sonny Rollins' Fans Worldwide. I need to share with you all the amazing experience of watching Sonny and his wonderful band (Anderson, Broom, Cranshaw and Watkins)Alive in Sao Paulo. It was 2 hours of excellent music, a strong stage presence, throwing to the audience the best in Jazz in the world from the Saxophone Colossus.
Imagine this: In each solo, the audience went mad, yelling and clapping their hands. People of all ages and tribes in total ovation to our Greek God. In the beginning, the audience was shy in front of the Colossus, however, after the second song we were all captured and involved by Sonny hypnotized tunes. As a result, when we realized, we were all stood up, yelling and asking for more.
God Bless Sonny!!!!

SR- I don't know really why I am doing this, writing, except that I hope it might make you feel good to know you are making others feel good. The daydream image of you practicing on the bridge is an inspiration.
I practice my thing, skateboarding, alone, at night most often. Skateboarding to me is a lot like jazz. While some of it might be based on tricks, it has more to do with style, how one rolls, how one stands on the board. It is not a sport but an art.
Your sounds have been swimming in my head these last few nights. Thank you.

To Sonny Rollins personally ...
Hi, I'm Inge Sonck, hope you still remember my dad, Wilfried Sonck?
Ever since he's been gone I still think a lot about him, and you, Count Basie, Duke Ellington, Toots Tielemans, Louis Armstrong, ... an numberous of jazz-legends he's been in touch with...
Ofcourse, I still remember you because you've been in our home, about 20-25 years ago, in Brasschaat ...
And up untill today, I still feel a strong connection with the music my dad loved, even if I have never seen you since than!
Hope to get a reaction, trying to find out what my daddy was all about ...
Kind regards,
Inge Sonck

Currently playing Doxy on piano-such a great creative blues with the syncopated groove. Simple pure music.
Loved your 90s record with Stephen Scott. Hope to catch you live some one of these nights. Happy life anniversary

Bless you Sonny.
I have been a big Springsteen fan and thought Clarence Clemons was the man. I told this to my father who loved jazz. He said Clarence cannot touch the likes of Sonny Rollins. I didn't understand as I didn't know who Sonny Rollins was. It took years and I love your style. Park Palace parade is my all time favorite.
Keep it coming and Happy Belated !!!
Mike

I just purchased and watched the Jazz Icons DVD release, Sonny Rollins - Live in '65 & '68. It is just incredible to have these performances preserved. A number of years ago, there were 2 cd's issued on the Italian Moon Records label which consisted of Sonny in Denmark in 1968. The video performance from 68 on the DVD is different than the cd, but with the same quartet. Were these Denmark performances the only ones that Sonny did in 1968. I do not know of anything done since these until 1972's Next Album release.

Mr. Rollins, I saw you in San Sebastian, Spain, quite a few years a go. You and your group started playing from a popular melody and then everybody was fliying on a misterious, open, fascinating stream of new music. At one moment, you could not go on with the playing: there where nowhere to go (except silence)! I remember your piano men smiling to you, and I remember my own joy. It was beautifull. Thank you very much for giving us so much, maestro.

Sonny, your view of music has been a part of my life since the age of 13. Oleo was a personal revelation and as for 'He's younger than you are' is the greatest ballad I've ever heard, mmmmmmm!
All the best to you,
