Dear Sonny,
Happy Birthday and many many more to you from Maxine, Dexter's wife. I came to hear and see you in Central Park this summer and you were fabulous as you always are. I was remembering an outdoor concert in Jacob Riis Park many years ago with Billy Higgins, Don Cherry, and Jim Hall. When a tugboat went by and blew its horn with that low B-flat, you answered and then the boat horn answered you. It was one of those thrilling Jazz moments in my life. Dexter always played along with the ships that we could hear from our terrace. Dexter loved you, as you know, and I love you too. Always, Maxine

NOW- here we are in 2008 and I can't WAIT to get a copy of "Road Shows - Volume 1"!! The excerts of the tunes sound INCREDIBLE!! The impact of your music is every bit as profound TODAY as it was that fateful day your saxophone playing hit me like a bolt of lightning as it lept from the grooves of that Kenny Dorham record! When I got to the last cut- "La Villa" I was awestruck by your mastery! Sonny, thank you for being one of the greatest examples of what it means to be a dedicated, striving human being, musician and artist! You continue to elevate not only the music but our hearts, minds and spirits. Happy 78th, my teacher! Ron Holloway |

HAPPY (78th) BIRTHDAY, SONNY!!!
Thank you for making this world a (far) better place! At 13 years of age I began playing the saxophone. I got serious about almost immediately. I began exploring my Dad's record collection and one day I saw your name on the back of the Kenny Dorham "Jazz Contrasts" album. I realized I had heard your name before and associated it with records of yours I heard throughout my childhood. I remembered your sound and eagerly put the record on the turntable. I listened intently to your solos on "Falling in Love With Love" and "I'll Remember April". I was amazedby your elastic sense of timing, your individuality, your humor and your obvious love for music! All of these things struck me at 13 years of age. This was in 1967. |

Newk-Your letter to Hawk not only reflects upon your humility and respect for your "father" but as you make clear, it places the qualities of what it is to be human front and center, even above the music. I have always felt that we are chosen (and privileged beyond our wildest dreams) to be messengers of humanity, mostly through the art, but more important as "human" examples of the search for truth, beauty, spiritual meaning, etc. Being so clear about these matters are something I have always noticed in your demeanor through interviews and even today, reading your heartfelt responses to the guestbook entries. We all love you and wish you continued health. I hope to see you soon again in person (Carnegie Hall was too crowded) and maybe get a chance to play with you.
Love Lieb |

Dear Sonny, I can't even tell how much I love your music. You're the one who showed me feelings in music that I never had before. There's almost no day passing I don't listen to your records and I'm incredibly happy to know there are people out there loving jazz just as much as I do. As long you're doing what you're doing my life is good. I'm looking forward to the concert in Munich in December... this is gonna be the greatest day of my life (I´m 17).
God bless you, you're my inspiration. I wish you all the best for your birthday on sunday, my thoughts and wishes will be with you. Now I got to go and practise the sax. :) Wenzel |

Happy Birthday Sonny....you have been a musical inspiration to me since my teenage years in the 50s...Saxophone Colossus (vinyl) was my awakening to playing the saxophone (along with Bird and others)...I still play Moritat and You Don't Know What Love Is with you in my head! We met briefly in London in the 70s and I interviewed you...we talked about reeds!! Long may you continue to play and inspire us. Stay well.

Hi Sonny:
It is an honor to be able to contact you, my husband is a saxophone player that loves your music,he is a musician made with the love for music he practice every day 3 to 5 hours inside our closet, since he was a little boy he loved to play flute but his dream was a Saxophone he only got it when he was a teenager. Because his life has been a very dificult one he has not be able to pay for a college education, but I can tell you he is one of the best because he practice every day and he play with his heart. We have not be able to afford a new saxophone and his is so damaged and full of rubber band on it but still being our number one way of income. Is his dream to play one day with you. I learned from him that no matter how hard it is the road you have to continue believe in your dreams, he is such a great person, everybody said that about him he deserve a chance in life, he just haven't have the chance to study or at least get a new saxophone, you can listen to his music at [www.myspace.com] |

Sonny,
What a pleasure to see you last night in Central Park (my 4th Sonny show over 14 years). I brought a friend who was unfamiliar with your music, but by the end of the show he was won over to you and your band. And what a band! Being a drummer myself, I was impressed with your percussionist and amazing drummer who propelled the music into funky grooves overflowing with energy. But it was your unmistakable sax that made the show. Thank you for St Thomas! |
