Hi Sonny:
It is an honor to be able to contact you, my husband is a saxophone player that loves your music,he is a musician made with the love for music he practice every day 3 to 5 hours inside our closet, since he was a little boy he loved to play flute but his dream was a Saxophone he only got it when he was a teenager. Because his life has been a very dificult one he has not be able to pay for a college education, but I can tell you he is one of the best because he practice every day and he play with his heart. We have not be able to afford a new saxophone and his is so damaged and full of rubber band on it but still being our number one way of income. Is his dream to play one day with you. I learned from him that no matter how hard it is the road you have to continue believe in your dreams, he is such a great person, everybody said that about him he deserve a chance in life, he just haven't have the chance to study or at least get a new saxophone, you can listen to his music at [www.myspace.com] |

Sonny,
What a pleasure to see you last night in Central Park (my 4th Sonny show over 14 years). I brought a friend who was unfamiliar with your music, but by the end of the show he was won over to you and your band. And what a band! Being a drummer myself, I was impressed with your percussionist and amazing drummer who propelled the music into funky grooves overflowing with energy. But it was your unmistakable sax that made the show. Thank you for St Thomas! |

Dear Mr Rollins,
Your example as to how an artist should approach his/her work is a true inspiration to all. I still play music now partly thanks to my discovery of your music as a young guitar player, and your example then inspired me to become an improvising musician. I will continue with the work and can't think of ever giving up. Thank you for all the music, the brilliant records and the stunning performances. Wishing you continued success, health and happiness, sir. May you play on and on and on..! Best wishes, Scott |

Hi Mr. Rollins

I have enjoyed the website immensley. However, I am sadden that I am unable to attend the Chicago Jazz fest this year. I know all those in attendance will have the thrill of their life. When God made Sonny he threw away the mold.
|
||||||||

I was wondering how you select the standards you perform in you concerts. Most are not well known by other jazz artists. I like this since it shows your endless catalog of tunes you are able to perform.
|
||||||||
|
'Jungoso', 'Decision', 'Alfie's theme', 'I've found a new baby', 'G Man', 'Don't stop the carnival' and others are always in my mind.
Colossus Rollins, your music is eternal, million thanks aren't enough to reward the daily sunshine you bring to anyone who understand what you are doing. Please tour in Beijing, or plan a year time itinerary so that your fans can plan a trip anywhere in the world just to have the chance to see you |

Hi Sonny,
I'm a young musician who's enthusiasm for Jazz has risen greatly in the past 2 years. My avid collections of Monk and Miles have led me to you and it gives me great pleasure to see you are still touring. I hope to make the trip to Frankfurt to catch you as I will be beginning my tour of the Southern hemisphere a week after. So a minor geographic sidestep would be very worth it. You have a been an inspiration to many. Thank you for your talents. Stuart O'Connor [www.myspace.com] |

My dear Sonny,
I've seen you in Vienne(FR) two years ago, and I wanna thank you for your wonderful performance. You give to a young sax player a great inspiration, maybe the greatest I have, not only in playing but also in my relation to music.When you play, you can always hear the next level, you said. Great. That's why I think when I'm playing. So, Thank's you ... Ps : I try to pick out your soli on "The Bridge" during my holidays ... Amazing! |
||||||||
|
I LOVE YOU
|

At the beginning of this year, for some reason, I started listening to Clifford Brown, and when you showed up on some of the Roach cuts--I remembered! Rollins! That's what I need! I haven't listened to anyone else since, and it'll be awhile before I'm done. I pick up a CD or two every month.
I clearly remember seeing you play in a club in Bakersfield, California, around '57, when I was in high school. That seems impossible, but it must have been at the time of "Way Out West". I've looked through old boxes of mementos hoping to find the autographed napkin, but nope. Right now, you're a major influence on my poetry. It would be hard to say just how that works, but I listen to you every day before writing, and I'm always asking myself, "Now how do you get that effect in words?" |
||||||||
|
Sonny, I bought a Tenor saxophone in Schenectedy, NY and I was told that you used to play on it could you please confirm or decline!!! Thats Selmer BA 1939 sn28887. All the best

Dear Sonny,
according to your schedule, you will play on Brasil on October. It will be great if you come to Chile to visit your fans. Greetings from Santiago, Alberto |

Sonny, I'd just like to say thanks for you're great music you've been making since before i was even thought of. Some people tell me Jazz is "dying out" or even "old peoples music". my only response is "do you have emotion? -then Jazz is just right for you."
anyways, just thanks for all you're great music, im having fun transposing Tenor Madness. keep it swingin, God Bless |

Mr Rollins
I am a Jazz music and history enthuiast. It is a shame in this day and time, the US has not embraced your talent and pure importance to this art as it should. I am an Air Force officer living in England for the past 16 yrs. I seem to be able to get ahold of all your great albulms of the past in Paris and Athens Greece more than the US. Keep it going, you are definitely being looked and taken care of from the one's whom have pass'd - Clifford Brown and Roach and Bird to mention of few. thanks for the time Joseph Peery |

I was born & raised in New York & exposed to your playing & music in my early teens. I listened to your music & practiced to it as best I could. Even though at times the music was "way over my head". Suffice to say, I have been a fan for many years. I really enjoyed watching Clifton's video about his first introduction to u & the musical relationship u all have.
Some of it reminded me of my first time workin' w/Reggie Workman when I was just fresh out of College. Despite the years I had been playin' & studying...I was nervous as heck w/all these "monster" musicians around me...LOL! But, guess I did ok cause I worked w/him for over a year before I decided to move to L.A. Sonny...as long as u keep doin' what u r doin', u know there r people that appreciate u, your art form, who are inspired from & by your music & gain from it. U r a true legend! Peace! |

Hi Sonny,
by the way,... what does "DOXY" mean? Is it in reference to "Doxa" or a former Rockfeller's code name? Warm Regards, Stephane. Guitarist from France playing in a band. |
||||||||

Dear Sonny, have a nice time in Europe! I like your new Vienne DVD - how you unit standards and freedom. But when comes the Antibes DVD (2005 concert)????
Looking forward to your concerts in Frankfurt and Zurich!!! Love, Barbara |

50 years of FREEDOM SUITE
The music is as fresh as 1958 and its subtle political message still is very important!!! Great album!!! |

Hi there
I always had two favourites in Jazz saxophone, they were a) of course, Sonny! NEWK! Theodore (Walter), and b) Trane Both are very versatile and talented saxophone players. Trane for his ideas and flow, but Newk for his powerful, strong tone, mostly in the deep scale tones. It's incredible with how much Newk knows to play these. So, finally, I really love the music of Newk and Trane. They are my sax-masters. In the beginning Trane had not that tone which Newk had, so Sonny is even a lot more "roots" than Trane. I'm so happy Newk comes to Zurich on December 9th this year. Newk, I will C U there! 'til then, with all my heart Daniel |

Hi Sonny.
I am listening your music for 4 decades and I never still hungry for more. Do you plan to be in REd See jazz festival (in Eilat) this summer? Thanks, Baruch. |

Sonny Rollins - Sydney Opera House June 1st 2008
Sonny walked on to stage with the band and the capacity crowd exploded in a show of appreciation I have seldom seen at the start of a concert. Sonny shuffled to centre stage and raised his tenor soaking in the welcome. His band members took their seats and waited. "St Thomas" is Sonny's signature tune and he did not disappoint. He blew for fully 12 minutes. Every phrase was a new idea, no two phrases sounded the same, from the bottom of the horn to the top of the altissimo range it was all there. A Caribbean carnival band had taken over the Opera House and the roar at the end of the track was heartfelt and deafening. After 2 hours the band left the stage. We weren't letting them away so easily and after 5 or 6 minutes of whistling, clapping and stomping they returned for one last number. In fact we were still whistling, clapping and stomping after that encore but the house lights came up. On the way out I studied the faces of the crowd and again everyone was smiling. I wondered if like me the whole audience, and the band, had been smiling for the last 2 hours 10 minutes. |
||||||||
|
Dear Sonny,
thank you for your performance at Sydney. It was such a fantastic show and I really hope it inspires you to return some day. My first ever jazz album was Live at Village Vanguard which I bought 20 years ago. To finally get to see you play was a dream come true. |

Back from Sydney Australia after a great tour. I have to say the audience in Sydney was amazing. The noise level of the crowd was simply amazing as Sonny walked onto the stage.

Dear Sonny,
Thankyou so much for coming such a long way to play for us. I hope you realise how loved you are by so many people, and how you ve enriched our lives over the years. Having listened and transcribed your music since I was a kid it was amazing to hear you play in person, and with such obvious love, enthusiasm and energy. I really hope Australia was a good experience for you.. Cheers and Best Wishes, Andy |

Sonny, thanks for a wonderful concert in Sydney. I've read that you hate hearing your old recordings. I, on the other hand, have loved listening to them for 30 years. Getting to finally hear you in person was something else though! Great band, great tunes,and so much positive energy! To say it exceeded my wildest hopes would be an understatement. I was totally blown away. That you are still humbly striving for improvement in your music is truly inspiring. It is an example we should all follow. Not just as musicians, but as human beings.

Just wanted to thank you and the band for a wild night of music on Sunday at the Opera House. The feeling of warmth and love, and dedication to the music, permeated the hall. I've loved Sonny's music for many years, but was surprised at how accessible and entertaining he was. His evolving development of the beautiful melodies of the standards took me, and I'm sure everyone else, on a lovely journey. And what a band! The tightness, the great grooves and the intuition felt between everyone on stage was deeply moving.
I was also inspired, and hope to do justice in my own playing to the whole band's wonderful lesson in performance, expression and improvisation. The Mike Nock Band was also a great opener. Thanks for having them - they did Sydney proud. |
||||||||

I made my first trip to Sydney yesterday to see Sonny at the opera house and I can honestly say it was the best night of my life.
I just wanted to thank Sonny for playing so beautifully "In a sentimental mood" was the highlight of the night for me...absolutely gorgeous. to top things off, the timing of Sonny's first Australian performance was impeccable as it was the day before my 18th birthday. as my dad said, It was like spending an evening with god. Thanks again to Sonny and the band for the best Birthday present off my entire life. Matthew Charles. Melburne, Australia. o-iii<O |

I am so glad I caught the show on 28th May. It was simply beautiful, start to end. A highlight definitely.... Thanks for stopping by sunny Singapore. Glad you enjoyed the weather here as well. Do come back.

Sorry to be repetitive, but could we please have the setlists for the Seoul concerts? Thank you very much.

Fantastic show last night at the Sydney Opera House - Sonny brought the house down. The interpretation of In A Sentimental Mood was in the same league as Trane and Duke's classic version.
Long live Sonny! Come back to Sydney ASAP. |
||||||||
|
What a privilege to see Sonny Rollins and his band at the Sydney Opera House last night. The deafening roar that met Sonny as he walked onstage showed how much this first ever Austalian show was anticipated. The spontaneous standing ovation at the end (after 2 hours and 15 minutes!) showed how much it was appreciated. Awesome!

LG Arts Center 5/23/08 1. Kim 2. Why Was I Born 3. In A Sentimental Mood 4. Someday I'll Find You 5. As Long As There is Music Here is the story behind the tune Kim if you were not at the first performance in Seoul, South Korea. Bob Cranshaw was in the army and served in the Korean War. While he was in Korea there was a South Korean soldier named Kim that assisted Bob carrying equipment. Overtime Bob and Kim became good friends. One day Kim and Bob were packing up equipment to leave and a mortar hit and killed Kim. Bob named his first son Kim after that soldier and Sonny Rollins wrote the song Kim after hearing the story.
