Hi Sonny-

Glad the shows are going well...only a week til Singapore...3rd row center...that's me! Looking so forward to it!

I don't know if you'll be around to meet any of your fans, but I'd be grateful for an opportunity should it present itself. I don't need five minutes of your time--just a chance to say thank you for your music and to shake your hand!

All the best Sonny!

I first picked up the saxophone because of you. Now I'm at U. Michigan majoring in Jazz & Contemplative Studies, which has a component of spiritual practice. Your music and more importantly your spirituality and philosophy of life are continuing inspirations. Thank you.

Dear Sonny--
Just read an article about you in Yoga Journal. I have always loved your music, found it beautiful. It was a great pleasure to read that you are on the path too. Glad you kept making music and didn't become a full time yogi. Wishing you many more sun salutations. Namaste.

I studied acting in New York--on Bank Street--as well as the work of other actors. But, I remember scenes, 'defining moments', not films. With music, it's the same. One (of many) defining moments: you playing "There Will Never Be Another You," at the Museum of Modern Art. Thank you dear sir.

Your tune "Island Lady" is great fun to play. I have taught it to many of my students at the Kidlington Area Music School, part of Oxfordshire County Music Service. It is a great tune to help teach improvisation. Thanks for keeping up your playing and continuing to be creative.

You have been a hugh influence on my saxophone playing and teaching

Sonny,

There is a group of saxophonists that would like to know what your set up was for certain albums.

We know you switched to the Selmer Mark VI in the later 50's but some are curious which albums you played the King Super 20? Some are wondering if you used a King on the Way out West album.

Thanks from a big fan of yours

Dear Sonny,

I'm really sorry for your loss.
I'm seventeen years old and i'm from Argentina. I've been studying alto saxophone for 4 years and soprano sax for two.

I'm a big fan of your work, I consider you my favourite saxophonist. Hope you keep playing like you do, and maybe some time you can come to Argentina or I can go wherever you play.

Best wishes for you,
Sincerely,
Ariel

Dear Mr. Rollins:

I have greatly enjoyed your music for many years and thank you for the joy you have brought to the world. I just watched your interview for the Great Day In Harlem program, and I related to your comments on how important it is to practice and stay in shape when you're not gigging. How many hours per day do you think would be a good practice regimine to keep the chops in top shape? I'm having a hard time fitting in as much practicing as I would like and I thought you could give me some perspective on how much is enough. Thank you and God bless.

I have an 11 year old son, who is stuying the piano and has just fallen for jazz. I took him to your Kennedy Center concert last night with his friend (studying saxophone) -- and they were just floored.

"Dad, I've never seen ANYTHING like that..."

How can a father say thank you to someone who has had the greatest of impact on music lovers of music for 50 years, and has touched people who have seen him and will play for the next 50 years?

Hello! Mr. Rollins,
A few friends and I witnessed the spectacular that you gave at Cerritos on the 5th and we were all touched. It was a very life changing experience. We all loved Sonny, Please. As a matter of fact, we are going to try to transcribe that song so we can perform it.

We were all glad to hear you.

Sonny and band: thanks for the mesmerizing show last night at Cerritos. Your song selection was brilliant, encompassing experimental music, ballads, calypso, country and blues.
Its great that you still write material like Sonny, Please, which I believe will be considered one of your all time masterpieces.
Kudos for the nice version of the
Hank Williams cover, Half as Much. I always enjoy it when you mine the great American songbook for new takes on classic material. Hmm, where did that final blues piece come from?

Thanks also to Boone, for providing me with his other front row center ticket for a transcendental experience that I will always remember.

Hi Sonny. I didn't get backstage to see you last night at Zellerbach Hall but Deni Willis and I were at your concert last night. You were, as always, amazing and remain the inspiration of my life and my family. Each time I see you perform, I remember my dad and your relationship with my parents; keeping us in line and making sure we remember what is really important in this life. I hope you enjoyed your Christmas gift (didn't get to speak to you since before the holidays) but I am sure you enjoyed it since Jackie told me it's what you love. I love everything you played last night, especially, They Say That Falling In Love Is Wonderful. I just listened to Johnny Hartman and I was so pleased to hear that. I do hope that the next time I come and see you whenever you're next in the SF Bay Area or I'm in NY or wherever you are, you can see my home. Also, when I see you perform, I would love as an adult, get to hear you play Alfie, St. Thomas and Sonnymoon for 2...my all-time favorites. Love, Carol Wyatt

Hi Sonny and Bret,

I am so glad to hear that the Vienne Festival DVD is coming out. I was actually at the show - it freakily coincided with a business trip/vacation to France and my wife found out about it. We spent two great days in the city, but the concert was the highlight of my entire trip. Sitting in those ruins of the Roman ampitheatre in France for a Sonny Rollins fan from Texas was incredible. I can't wait to order it!

Good evening Sonny, just wanted to send you best of my wishes for all of your concerts this year. If I could I would visit a third one in summer, but unfortunately I have too much work at that time. But I am looking forward like a "Schneehase" to your live music in Frankfurt and Zurich in November/December, I love you. Frenzy Barbara - your mad fan from Germany!

Sonny-

Elated at the news of your show in Singapore! I have managed to get row C center seats for the performance. To say I am excited would be an understatement. As a Chicago native, I grew up grounded in the sounds of Jazz music. While the diverse exposure has been great, I always return to albums like 'Way Out West' and 'East Broadway Run Down' when I want to feel something special--especially when I miss home (having lived in Singapore for 9 years). Hence, the chance to see you live is something I really look forward to--to see the master ply his trade. It is a honor! Roll on May 28th.

Gratefully,

Bryan

Greetings Sonny,

I am the son of Brother T, and I am sure you remember the good food in Juanita's kitchen when you were a teenager.

I will be at the show in Berkeley on April 3, 2008. I hope to see you again. The last time we met I was 6 years old, and you invited me, my father, and my mother to sit in the wings for the second half of the show.

Not sure if you are taking requests for your upcoming live CD project, but I just had to say that "More Than You Know" from your 2006 concert in Knoxville was easily the most beautiful and exhilarating musical experience of my life. I think about it often and would love to see it live on. Either way, I really enjoyed your interview the other night; thanks again for talking to me in the elevator and for your inspiring note a few years ago. You're my hero. Keep up the fantastic work.

Mr. Rollins, I was in the audience the other night at the CUNY grad center, and I just wanted to say thank you for coming that night, and to thank you as well for all the wonderful music. I respect your artist's tendency to be critical of your own work, but I have been listening to "Saxophone Colossus" and "The Bridge" over and over since Wednesday, and I can tell you that your music does nothing but bring delight to jazz fans. Thank you.

Hello Mr. Rollins. I am a giant fan of your music and I was wondering if you could help me out. I'm a student at Bernardsville Middle School and I need to write a paper for public speaking. We have to write about a career that we wish to enter, I am hoping to be a jazz musician. All I need is for you to answer a few questions.
1. How much work is involved? I.E. Hours of work.
2. What education do I need?
3. Do I need to be licensed?
4. How much money do you make?
5. What types of insuurance do I need?
6. Is continued education needed to be in the field?
7. How many years of education are needed?
8. What backround should I have for this field?
9. What experiences should I have to consider this field?
10. How stable is the employment?
Thank you. I hope that you respond.

Hello Mr. Sonny. Music is the only thing in my life important to me. But I was lost, until I found a master in you. I don't know much of your music but that makes me happy to know there is so many beautiful things to hear yet. My favourite tunes of yours are Airegin(i love performance with Miles on Bag's Groove; solo is phenomenal but what is most amazing for me is that, when you play intermission, these few notes are filled with such a passion and feeling), Strode Rode(I think i like minor keys) and John S.. I love colour of your playing, logic of your solos, its architecture filled with feeling. I'm playing clarinet but I'm about to change to tenor. I'm 20 and sometimes I'm thinking it's to late for me to play well. But on the other hand, as I said, there is nothing better then music in my life. And your music guides me. Thank You for all that Great Music. All the best, Mateusz

I was at the concert in Carnegie hall, and I thought the music was amazing! Especially the trio set.
Lets just pray that Sonny Changes his mind, so that all the people who wasn't there get a chance to hear the music that was recorded.

It is very disappointing to hear the 50th Anniversary Concert will not be released. This is puzzling for a couple of reasons. First, a lot of people at the show and many eminent musicians thought the music was great. Also, the reasoning is odd. Sonny has said in interviews that he doesn't listen to his own recordings (or even much other music during the last 20 or so years). One listen to the version of Serenade on Sonny, Please should have sufficed to keep that off the CD. Is Sonny embarrassed at how "great" the trio with Christian and Roy sounds compared with his nondescript band? No one who has written about the concert has said the trio playing was not up to snuff.

Sonny:
I feel compelled to express my extreme disappointment in your decision not to release the Carnegie Hall performance on CD. Having been to more than 50 of your performances dating back to the Village Vanguard in the 50's and the Carnegie Hall concert in September, I thought that the Carnegie Hall performance was one of, if not, your best. It was a magical evening seeing and hearing you interact with Roy Haynes and Christian McBride. Although you may not have liked your performance, your audience that night was enthralled by it. It was "some enchanted evening." Also, I and many of your fans have been waiting to hear the original concert 50 years ago. Even if you won't consider releasing a CD of the concert last year, why not release the concert from 50 years ago?

Dear Mr Rollins,

Your music is an inspiration. You are on the first jazz record I ever bought as a teenager (The Amazing Bud Powell Volume One) and you I'm very glad that you're still with us and still making great music. I have copied your stuff on guitar (as far as I'm able to), because so much jazz guitar isn't as beautiful or powerful as your music. It's a privilege when you get to be alive at the same time as your heroes! All the best, live long - AJ smile smile
