Sonny, I miss you on Facebook! It's my fondest wish to see you in 2012 and to tell you in person how thrilled I am to share space in the universe with you :) To hear you speak about Jazz, to know that you are still playing with vigor and courage and creativity - it means the world to me and to so many of us! God bless you always - I will never forget how kind you were to me, publicly, a few months back. Congratulations on your Kennedy Center Honors!

Saw you last night on Tavis Smiley, and you're looking great! My wife called me in from the other room when she saw you were appearing. She's not a huge jazz person, but she knows who the heavyweights are. All the best for 2012!

Sonny, I used to live next door to you and Lucille in Germantown NY. I used to watch your mother-in-law and your dogs when you went out of town. I moved from the area in 1981 when I got married to Scott DeCicco. Think of you often. We moved to NC in 1996, brought Mom with us. We had three children, two of which are in Heaven now. We currently have two grandchildren that live in Massachusetts with their father, our son, Michael. Give us a call sometime, 919-742-6038.

Dear Sonny,
I wish to take this opportunity to thank you from the deepest of my heart for having accompanied me with your loving musical message all this way from my early youth till now, at age 50. I do recognize in you one of the prominent monuments of American Classical Music, nowadays known throughout the world thanks to you also, and through you I salute all those who have given so, so much to me musically and not only. Through the story of their lives, and the reflexions the moments of joy and/or sadness had on their recorded performances, I was also enticed to deepen my scant and superficial knowledge of American modern history to a now barely acceptable level. Thus please be the recipient of my sincere love and enthusiasm together with your long time friends Coltrane, Monk, Powell, Clifford, Roach, Davis, Evans, Prez...just to name a few. I owe you all so much and try to give it back to the people every time I have a chance to play my drums in public. Thank you, dear Sonny, Thank you. Thank you Andrea |
||||||||
|
Dear Sonny,
Thank you for the beautiful concert in Eindhoven last tuesday! We enjoyed it so much! It was the second time we joined your concert. The first time was in the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam last year. It felt like music in heaven! If you come back again to the Netherlands in the future: count us in. We will be there, don't want to miss it. Wish you all the best! X, Esmeralda. |

Sir,
I can't quite explain how vital your music has been to me throughout my life. While I was growing up, your music was played in our home, and my older brother Dan (Faulk) and I would study your recordings. We would each pick a part-maybe your solo, accompanying trumpet/trombone, piano chord structure, bass line, drum patterns-we literally did our best to learn from the musical bible of your recordings. My brother Dan ended up playig saxophone (tenor and soprano)in JJ Johnson's combo and big band during JJ's latter years until he unfortunately passed. Dan was blessed with the journey of playing alongside one of his idols, JJ, and vicariously playing with another one in you. Although I'm a drummer, I strive to be as expressive as I can-I get positive comments on my unique style of drumming, which I owe in large part to my years of studying your improvisation. Thank you, God Bless, and you are truly a legend among legends, Matt Faulk |

Dear Sonny,
Your performance in Einthoven yesterday was really terrific! In particular, a new (I think) up-tempo tune was so cool. Your rhythm section ran like the wind in the grass. And you improvised on the rhythm. I wished I could have immersed myself into that tune much, much longer. Sonny, wherever you come within three hours drive range from my home, I will come to your concert. But if possible, please come to Dusseldorf next time (and let me hear your singing voice like in 2008...) Regards, Hideaki |
||||||||
|
Dear Mr. Rollins,
I am transcribing some of your solos. If you ever come back to Ann Arbor, Detroit or if you come to Lansing, I would love the opportunity to play them for you. I would also like to thank you. Your music makes me proud to be a saxophonist, and I cannot possibly show you what tremendous joy that gives me, or how incredibly grateful I am to you - but I am sure you understand. Indelibly in the soul, Ella |

Sonny...I was at the interview at the New Orleans jazz fest in 2011 but I did not get to ask this question. I read a quote from you a few years back wherE you said if you have Jim Hall playing guitar with you ...you dont need a piano player. As an aspiring jazz guitarist Jim is one of my favorites and I listen to him often...could you explain that statement.......and please COME BACK TO HOUSTON, WE MISS YOU!

I was taking a trip to the Amsterdam from Lithuania last year, just to see and hear Mr. Rollins(in Concertgebouw) - my true jazz idol and person I respect a lot. The concert was great, and I believe I was the loudest applauder that time. I can't express how much my soul was happy to be there.
I took one of my favorite Sonny's vinyl records to Amsterdam with a hope to get it signed by Sonny Rollins. After the concert, after Sonny and the band descended the stairs from the stage, I came to Sonny and asked for an autograph. I got no response from him and the guards and some people from the stuff were surrounded him. Then I asked Russel Malone for an autograph, and he said "Later" to me. I was not annoying or aggressive - I was keeping myself on the distance from them, because I respect them. But.. I can't express how sad it was to be near the dream and let it go this way. I still remember the disappointment and believe I will remember it for all my life. Although I am really glad I have a chance to see my idol's live performance. Wish you all the best, Vsevolod

Dear Sonny,
I caught your interview with Tavis Smiley and was riveted. It put a big smile on my face. It confirmed for me once again that the great philosophers of our time, and the true people who can change the world for the better are ARTISTS. - No politician, no businessman can give as much HOPE and LOVE as an ARTIST. - I was hanging on every word you said. "To know one's self" is the most important thing in life. "To be able to understand the man in the mirror" is why we are here. You spelled it out in black and white for everyone to see. You were shining like a diamond on the program. Age has no distinction to truth except that as we get older, hopefully our ART will lead us to more understanding. I salute you Sonny Rollins as a great man who made EARTH a more aesthetic place. - Laurence Gartel, Digital Media Artist |
