Very thank's for the BOLOGNA concert 2010. Very straordinary. You are the best.

Dear mr. Rollins just saw you at the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam and I'm impressed. Not just by the fact that you're playing like a youngster, but the way you talked that night through your sax was great.
I wasn't that familiar with your work, but I really like the way you play jazz. Not just an excuse to show off, but you're really playing each and every note meaningfully. So inspiring to see a good tune played in a million ways. Never loosing it's power. I really liked your version of 'In a sentimental mood' one of the best songs ever written. I really hope to see you again. |

Mr. Rollins
My dad and I saw you play at Symphony hall in Boston. It was an unforgettable experience. Thank you so much big grin How can I play more like Coleman Hawkins? I idolize his music, and wish that I could play the way that he does. |
Mr. Rollins,
Thank you for the wonderfull evening yesterday in the Concertbuilding in Amsterdam. I enjoyed it so much, you and your musicians were so inspiring! One year ago I got a alto saxophone from my husband, for my birthday. I purchased your CD "Sonny Rollins The Quartets, Featuring Jim Hall" Since then I'm a fan of your music. And after last night even more! Thank you for your music, you are a real inspiration for me. I wish you all the best, a good health and many musical years to go ! Best regards, Esmeralda |
Sonny! I know you've heard of Paul Madison!.... Contact me so we can talk about him, it is very important.
Mr. Rollins, After picking up the saxophone again after twenty years, I bought your Saxophone Collosus and Coltrane's A Love Supreme, knowing nothing about either, just wanting to hear some sax music. Now, after devouring as much of your music as I have been able to find I am sure that if I can ever truly express myself on the sax it will largely be due to your inspiration. Thank you so much.

My friend and I both attended your Detroit concert earlier this year. There was such an energy, yet I could not get up and start dancing around like my soul was in the seat. It was the single best concert of my life, please, please, please come back! If not, I still can't believe how lucky I was to see you play in person. The whole band is just so intense, I love your music. Everyone in that room was moved immensely.

Sometimes one note, others a lot of... But all of them at the exactly moment in time and space. That amazing thing called talent. Thank you Mr Rollins!!

Dear Sonny Rollins,
Thank you so much to you and your band for playing so generously yesterday in Lucerne. I was not expecting such an extensive and expressive performance: you played the portrait of the artist, and it sure was as a young man. We all rejoiced as you and your band spurred us into further applause with that delightful Sonny touch of the Caribbean. You, your band, your sound engineer and support, your general strength, your unstoppable stamina!... blew tears out of our eyes. Thank you. To Duane Hubbard, son of the great Freddie, who posted comment 973 just below: with Sonny on stage with his bright red shirt and his shiny horn, I know at least one Little Sunflower that has a smile on her face. -Thomas |

It's written to be in Spanish, it is NOT, the language is CATALAN, also a latin language, but different. My regards to all you trouppe I liked them very much, special greetings to Bob Cranshaw in top form !!! XC |

Mr. Rollins,

Dear Mr. Rollins,
As you are not coming to Dusseldorf on this European tour, I went to Luxembourg to see you last night. Three hours drive was nothing. How amazing! Whenever I attended your concerts, I always felt "this is the best". And again, the concert of yesterday was the best. A part of the reasons was, fortunately, I took the front-row seat just a few meters away from you (incredible!). I could hear the sound of your tenor directly. And I sometimes felt you were playing only for me! (I know many of the audience thought the same way.) I almost started to cry when you started "In a sentimental mood". I am really looking forward to seeing you again very soon somewhere in Europe or my home country Japan. P.S. Please let me hear your singing a song next time like you did so in Dusseldorf in 2008. Arigato, Hideaki

Dear Mr. Rollins,
Thank you for all you do sir. I have lost a dvd I had of your commission for a symphony in Japan and the resulting concert. I was haunted by that music. I cannot find a reference to it anywhere online, in your discography, anyplace. Can you help? Thank you! (the image of you pacing on the Brooklyn bridge sustains me in my alto practice!) |

Dear Mr Rollins
Since I first heard "Doxy" played by Tubby Hayes 45 years ago the melody has ben in my head. Now with this modern internet its possible to drop you a line to thank you for that tune and all the other ones. Yours very sincerely Richard Houghton PS I'd be curious to know what instrument/mouthpiece you play... and did anyone ever say to you " you'll never make a living with that, Sonny" ? |

Happy Belated Birthday!!!!! I love the sounds of Sonny Rollins, I recently started playing the saxophone (alto/soprano) and people would always ask who is your mentor. Well, I did not have one until I listen to you. Thank you so much for all you do. I appreciate you sharing your gift with me and so many others who love and appreciate the sound of beautifully played music...

Hi Sonny,
Thanks for turning your fans on to Thelonius Monk, he is the greatest. I'm a singer who now plays jazz piano, for better or worse. Wish I could practice every day with you for a month. Miss all the cool cats in NYC (if you were the only cat in the world and I was the only dog)would you still need a pianist bad enough to let me play. XXXXXX Love M |

Amongst lots of great jazz musicians ever existed, you are the best one for me.
While I was watching you in Osaka, I suddenly realized that we were witnessing the most fruitful, most dynamic jazz age ever, because you were standing there, blowing there that day, no one but you. I am so lucky to be given birth at the same era you're living in. Thank you Sonny. P.S. In Osaka, I believe I spent all my luck in my life because, after your show, my long time hero Mr.Bob Cranshaw appeared at the drive way and kindly shook my hand and gave me a word (I play just a little bit of bass, so..). Best wishes to you and Bob and your wonderful members. |

Dear Sonny, thank you for coming to Japan again. You had come here a number of times, but it was the first time I saw you on stage. The hall was packed with people who love you and your music, and I had a wonderful, memorable time. I'm looking forward to seeing you next time!!

Sonny
You're one of my heroes, and, I'm ashamed to say, I had a ticket for the Beacon Theatre show and did not go; don't ask........ I've seen you approx 20-25 times over the last 35+ years. PLEASE release the concert, or, at the very least, allow people to post videos on youtube. I'm so upset that I missed the show, and it would make me feel better to be able to hear (and see) what took place. Happy 80th Jeff |
Sonny, when are you ever going to play Hotlanta? PLEASE have some pity on us poor, forlorn southern Jazz fans.
Sonny looked and sounded great. There were so many musical highlights, but Ornette was the BOMB! What a contrast in styles. Sonny is the consummate melodist who can twist and bend any melody to his own will and Ornette possibly the most original improviser in the history of jazz not changing or altering his style to suit the moment definitely inspired Sonny to dig down deep, which he did. What a glorious moment for jazz. What a glorious moment to be alive and to witness jazz history.

Wishing you a very happy (although belated) birthday! You are one of my biggest inspirations, both musical and spiritual. Thank you for being here and sharing your gift.

Sonny, my 4 year old son, Haruki, and I had such a pleasure meeting you, however briefly, at the book signing at Tribeca B&N Tuesday night. It was a great follow-up affter the fantastic show @ the Beacon Friday. I'd love to find out the Beacon concert may appear on CD/digital format sometime down the road!

Happy belated birthday, Sonny! Love your music! Long life and good health to you! You wouldn't happen to be performing in NYC around Christmas, would you?

Belated Happy Birthday Sonny, you are awesome !!! I can wait to catch your next show in NYC. Maybe you should come and play at Cornell at Bailey Hall. I just saw Maria Schneider tonight here and she was great. Mingus played one of his best concerts here with Dolphy in '64. We would love it if you came. Several years ago we held the SOHO Jazz scene symposium with Sam Rivers, Henry Thredgill, Charlie Haden, and others [www.cornell.edu]
Please come and play for us !! |
Big love to you, Sonny.
I was gigging downtown while you were in full flight at the Beacon. And all we talked about after our concert was what we could only imagine was happening at your celebration. Thanks for all your kindnesses, and for all the music , past and to come! Play on! |

Thank you once again! From Stanley Crouch's invocation to Saint Thomas it was all a dream! Every solo a deviation from the mood of the last one,a joy to behold. Thank you for letting us be there and seeing the transitions from guest to guest, mood to tempo. A historic night that we will be telling our grandkids about. That bridge by Williamsburg should wear your name."If Ever I Would Leave You" was sublime.........the mood change when Roy(Hargrove) came out brought me back in mind to the Riverside sessions. Great to see Christian,Jim,Roy Haynes,Ornette in one night. Looking forward tour 81st.Kismet.......
