I'm 47 and came to jazz about two years ago when I began feeling too old for the improvisational rock "jam bands" that I'd loved for so long. A friend recommended jazz. Needless to say, I have never looked back. As I sit here right now, "Saxophone Colossus" is filling the room. Am glad to see that you're still making music. I won't be in New York in September, but my heart will be! I'll get my chance someday. THANK YOU for this brilliant, timeless music.

Hello, I just want to share that at the MacDowell Center I noticed Sonny had autographed some medium-sized posters with his image on them so that the Center could use them to fund-raise. Imagine our surprise to see that he had autographed each one differently. Some signed just "Sonny" and some began with "Hello". One even had the beginnings of a drawing on it! We all shared a moment in the gift shop and enjoyed that even when doing something mundane as autographing a stack of posters he managed to, dare I say, always make it new and different. You know I picked me up one fine poster, and others did as well. Thanks, MacDowell Center gift shop people and that you, Sonny!!

You're a beautiful soul, thank you for sharing the day with us all - "I wish more people were like you all." My dream is to see you at NYC's Beacon Theater on September 10th. Again, an honor, Sonny. Hello Sonny. I am 16 and have been playing tenor for 6 years and you are my biggest inspiration. I plan on attending Manhattan School of Music and not only have you influenced my playing but also my life. When I sit down and listen to St.Thomas, it really brings me back to when I was younger and playing out in the summer without any cares or worries. You are my biggest inspiration and influence and I want to wish you a happy birthday. And many more to come
Hope you have a great birthday Sonny. You have been one of my inspirations for many years. I will see you on Sept. 10th.

Just a simple message to Sonny.
Have a really happy birthday and many many thanks for the hours of pleasure and satisfaction I have derived from your great music. Many more happy and peaceful birthdays in the future. |

Hi Sonny, finally the news made its way where exactly it was that Chelsea Clinton got married: in Rhinebeck, of all places, just down the road from where you live...
Due to the level of national importance details of the marriage did not make its way out to the public, the whole affair appeared to be highly classified. Now come on, admit it, its all the result of your behind the scenes activity, you and Bob did a duo of your new composition at the wedding, entitled the "Chelsea Clinton Waltz", which will be the cover tune of your next CD, the proceeds of which (subtracting studio hire, fees for studio musicians etc etc) will be forwarded to an environmental project of the William Jefferson Clinton foundation. This Is It! Rollins Pulled The Strings to attract Clinton marriage to upstate NY. Congratulations! Diz didn't make it, but when are you running for the White House? I'll vote for you, but only as long as you keep making us all so happy from the bandstand, too.... Best Wishes Patrick |

Dear Mr. Rollins,
It was an honor to meet you at the Montreal Jazz Festival on June 27 when my parents gave me a terrific surprise by taking me to see you perform. This was my first Jazz concert and as a young saxophone player I was in awe of your brilliant performance. A terrific night got even more spectacular when you were so gracious in allowing my family and I to meet you backstage after the concert. We want to say a Big Thank you for a wonderful evening and May God Bless you always – Keep blowing – you’re truly an inspiration. Ps. Happy 80th Birthday. Sincerely Tyler McCook and Family |

Hi Sonny. I want to tell you I am a huge fan. I learned you are coming to Greece this November and I would like to come and see you.
Unfortunately the people that organize your tour in Greece have decided that we should pay up to 7 times more than in othern countries. Although prices in Britain start from 11 Euro, up to 90, in Greece prices start from a whooping 70 Euro!!! Yeap.. 70 Euro!!! In Luxemburg tickets go from 21 euro, in Lucerne, Switzerland from 37 euro and in Amsterdam from 38 euro |

Hello Sonny, I had the pure joy of seeing you at the MJF, very cool show,

Mr. Rollins,
I have have been wanting to see and hear you play for a long time. Yesterday in Rotterdam it finally happened. You have touched my soul with your music. Thank you. Cee |

Dear Sonny,
A few weeks ago I listened to some of your music, and every bar I heard was really exciting! What I love about your music is that you make every single solo a wonder - your fingers move so fast on the keys. I'm 10 and 11 months and I've been learning the saxophone for 9 months. My teacher (Nick Beston) says you can do create a 15 minute solo out of a 16 bar head. I heard a recording of you playing Alfie's Theme. I loved it! You've got a wonderful tone that I'd love to have. I play Alfie's theme, but you play it a hundred times better. I love jazz and I wish more people my age would appreciate just how special jazz is. It can show humour, and all other great feelings. I find it extremely sad that not many children like jazz in our days. My friends think jazz is an old thing, but I plan to bring jazz back into the number one slot. I hope to see you play live at the gig in London in the autumn. It's a fact that you're a really cool dude! From yet another fan. Asha Parkinson |

Dear Sonny,
Wish you all the best for your following concerts in Europe. Please take care of yourself!!! Looking forward to your Lucerne concert in November and looking forward to seeing you again!! So much!! You are definitely my inspiration. Barbara |

Dear Sonny Rollins, I actually laughed and cried. Your concert was both accessible and at the same time totally out there. I was worried right at the beginning about "stamina" and then you blew the crap out of that thing. I am grateful to have gotten out of my own head, just for a while and really enjoyed the moment. Thank you very much.

Thanks for such a wonderful website - your videos provide so much information and history.
I have been a lifetime fan of yours since I discovered jazz in 1958-59 at school in Louisville, and was blessed to finally see you in Escondido CA (suburb of San Diego) in the late 1990's. Thanks for touching my heart for all these years, and for sharing so much with so many people. May God bless you in all you do and grant you a long long life. Sam |

Hello again Sonny,
I've written you before about the Parade of One project, in which I play sax on the street in Rwanda. (I will expand to other regions next year.) This summer I am returning to Rwanda to perform for peace and reconciliation during their tense election period. I've written an essay about how the electoral process alone cannot defend us from the evils of our society, and how this leads me to play sax, improvising on the street. I hope you'll read it at this link: [bit.ly] In this project, you have been a big inspiration! I think a lot about your playing. Sorry you couldn't make my Birthday Parade back in March. Best wishes, Jeremy |
You are such a HUGE inspiration to us all. May you keep blowing your horn loud and strong for another 70+ years. And thank you for a LIFETIME of wonderful music to listen to, to play, to study, and to teach. You are an icon.
Sincerely, Cameron Hood bass player |

I asked the question about meditation at the meet the artist session in Burlington. I was sitting in the audience with a guitar (that you and Jim signed) at the soundcheck. Your show was so inspiring, I can't really say anything about it! Since you said you're looking for young artists, I should be sending a CD or two soon...
Hi Sonny, I came to the "Meet the Artist" event in Burlington, Vermont and very much enjoyed hearing you speak about your life and experiences. Tonight is your show at the "Flynn" and I have a front row seat so I feel very lucky. As an saxophone player myself, I have been most inspired by your work. Thank you!

I enjoyed your concert v. much at Disney hall last Sunday! Thank you
Dear Sonny, last night I dreamed of you playing in a traditional marching band, it was a sunny day, blue sky, all musicians with red clothes on, it was in the open countryside on a green meadow, and there were lots of medieval knights with shining silver armour suits, but without weapons. Guess the music made the weapons obsolete ...
Dear Sonny,
What can I say that hasn't already been said other than I LOVED IT! Once again, you showed the audience what genius looks, feels and sounds like. The performance last night was spectacular at UC Berkeley/Zellerbach Hall. All of the performers was perfection and the songs I recognized and saw you do at previous performances were fresh and invigorating because you always keep us guessing and smiling with your genius in soul-soothing improvisation, as well as giving us our favorite dishes with new and exciting flavors (Russell Malone on Guitar is not only a wonderful surprise, he's a sensitive genius and a very wonderful addition to your band; Kobe Watkins was on fire...Max Roach would be proud to see his young protege). Thank you Peter for all that you do to keep everything as wonderful as it was. You are a magic man(ager). I can't wait to see you again and have just spoken to my mom about coming to NY in September to The Beacon Theater. God Bless You and safe travels. Love, Carol Wyatt |
P.S. Can you please let me know the names of the songs you played last night in Berkeley. Thank you!
Your performance at Zellerbach last night was incredibly wonderful! You are a sturdy guy, dear Sonny. You play and play and play your music [which I love!] with joy and thoughtfulness. The band was great! I could tell how much they like playing with you and you with them. Thank You! Thank You!
Your performance at Zellerbach Hall tonight was incredible! Never having been a jazz listener, I can say that I finally get it!!!
Can you tell me the list of songs you played tonight? Am particularly interested in knowing the third piece. Thanks! Vicki |

Magnificent music in Berkeley tonight. Thank you for bringing so much light and joy into the world.

Dear Sonny
Congradulations on becoming an elected member to the American Academy of Arts & Sciences. You deserve this so much. It was wonderful meeting you again at the Tarrytown Music Hall last December. I hope you saw the photograph that I took of you and the band there that is used to advertise the Barcelona Jazz Festival. Take Care & I hope you play around here soon. -Noel from Herb's Cleaners in Tribeca |
Dear Mr. Rollins: Thank you for gracing Seattle with the imagination, intricacy, and joy of your wonderful spontaneous composition last night. I've been a major admirer of your music ever since my parents first exposed me to jazz during my childhood. Although I'm a musician of vastly less skill and experience than you, I learn something important about music every time I hear you perform.
I hope you will be able to play here again soon and that the tour is a fantastic success. Also, congratulations on the honors bestowed by the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. I can't hink of a more deserving recipient. |
Sonny, Great to see you in Seattle last night!! Really enjoyed the opportunity to hear you share your gift. Also thanks so much for staying outside afterwards!! Such a memorable night!!
Juan Cotto Seattle, WA |

Mr. Rollins,
I saw your show in Seattle tonight and was blown away! Your playing was incredible as usual and your band was great...especially drummer Kobie Watkins. Seeing such things truly enriches one's life. Please return soon and often. Thank you, Bill Koonce |
And what a great show you put on in Seattle! Thanks very much for your music-- as you said, one of the last things that matters in this world.
Dear Mr Rollins,
My wife and I flew on the plane with you yesterday from NYC to Seattle where you're playing tomorrow night. You were so gracious to us when we approached you as long time admiring fans. What was even more impressive to us was how much of the long flight time you spent studying your music. It was a real time lesson in excellence. We look forward to hearing you play tomorrow night. Jazz Forever, Art & Linda Harper |

Hi,
I am looking for information on the pianist Sonny Clark. There's not much written about him because there are few interviews. I was hoping to find out more about him from someone who knew him. Thanks. Jordan Piper |
I love the duet that Sonny played with Clifford Brown on their "East Basin St" recording. It was called "Time" and was written by Richie Powell, younger brother of Bud and a fine pianist himself. Sadly Richie, his wife Nancy and Clifford all died soon afterwards in a car accident.
Does anyone know where I can get the music for "Time"? |
Dear Mr. Rollins,
My daughter Calypso and I will be attending your May 16 show at Disney Hall in Los Angeles. She is a young alto sax player and was wondering if she might bring her sax and play Sonnymoon for Two with you after the show if that's possible. If not, of course we understand and we look forward very much to hearing you play. Yours, Io McNaughton |
Dear Mr. Rollins, if we loved you any more, you would evaporate! Onwards and upwards!
Hi Mr. Rollins!
I am an absolute fan of yours. Unfortunately, I discovered you only a few years ago with I first heard "Way Out West" on vinyl at a friends in San Francisco. Since then, I have almost all your albums, both on CDs and Vinyl. I must have every version of "Way Out West" ever issued, except for the Analogue Productions 45RPM LPs. Needless to say, I've seen you every time you come to the San Francisco Bay Area and will also this year when you visit Zellerbach hall in Berkeley! I look forward to you ever changing sounds and growth! All the best to you Sonny! One of you many fans, Tuan |
Dear Sonny,
Congrats on being elected into the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. You represent all that is good in jazz and have carried the torch so very well for all of the great jazz musicians who never received such prestigous an honor. I know that you feel like this is more for them than it is for you. Keep blowin! Nate |
CONGRATULATIONS ON YOUR ELECTION TO AAAS! I was privy to the nominations this year, and am thrilled that your talent and contributions have been recognized.
I was privileged to meet you after your performance in Chicago--thank you so much for taking the time to meet with a few fans. Your performance was amazing! |

Dear Sonny,
Once you said "OKAY FELLOWS" - and then the wonderful album "WORKTIME" started. Now I say "CONGRATULATION FELLOW" to your membership of the American Academy of Arts & Sciences". Have my Lucerne-Ticket (Nov 2010) - looking forward like hell Best of wishes and much LOVE, Barbara |

Hello Mr. Rollins,
I saw your concert at Symphony Hall this past Sunday night and I enjoyed it very much. This was only the second time I had the pleasure of hearing you in a live performance, the other time being in 1972 or 1973 at the old Jazz Workshop on Boylston Street when I was a college student. Both times you impressed me with your big sound, energy and musical creativity. Thank you. I also remember that night back then because George Peppard, the deceased actor, who was in Boston filming his TV show Bannacek, walked up, sat down on the edge of the stage drinking and smoking during one of your sets. I thought it was rude and distracting of him. But he's long gone and you're still playing. Karma. Thank you again. Sincerely, Reed G. Alexander |

So grateful to have seen and heard you all last night april 18 and to have been part of such a great Hall- full opening their ears wide. loved the musical dances you did with each other and loved being part of the house staying with the music and boogying in our seats. (we were painting too, and hope you got the pix)... WOULD LOVE TO SEE THE SET LIST. today marathon day felt boston was twice blessed in two days, standing in a crowd cheering every single runner as thousands, old and young seekers from everywhere streamed by revealing their vulnerability and strength-- thankful for the Music and the Long Distance Run. |
Dear Mr. Rollins,
words will not do justice in conveying the feeling that was present in my heart last night at the Symphony Hall show, so I will be brief, merely say thank you wholeheartedly. It was worth waiting nearly thirty three years to see you and certainly, proved to be one of the best nights of my life. You move me to no end. With utmost respect and best wishes, Cher |

When a visit to Portugal? |

Dear Mr Rollins, I was at your concert on Friday in Chicago. It was astounding. You are astounding. I've wanted to see you live for fifteen years (since first hearing you) and, boy, you surpassed all sixty years of your stellar recordings. God bless your energy, your immense talent and everything you do. You are the best, Rory.
