My admiration of you and your music took a great leap when I heard you play live at the Russian River Jazz Festival many years ago. A great performance in a lovely setting.

Hi Sonny - Pannonica on Monk's Brilliant Corners album has a amazing seamless modulation from B to C and it's done in a way where it's almost imperceptible. It sounds like you and Ernie Henry (on alto) play sharp while descending in the first half of bar 3 (of head) and flat while ascending in last half of bar 3 in order to facilitate this. If you have any recollections (50+ years later!) about this, I'd love to hear them. Thanks, Bill

My wife Katharine and I met you backstage at your last London gig (she presented you with her homemade chocolate brownies!). Just thought I'd say that on 1st July this year, our son Adam Silvio Wickenden was born.

Now, I'd been playing my saxophone to Kath's stomach on occasion during her pregnancy and amongst the tunes, was her favourite, St Thomas. Now he has arrived, playing St Thomas comforts him every time if he is crying!

I too was at the Toronto show last Friday, which really had the aisles rocking; a more raucous show the dignified Four Seasons Centre has probably never seen! The opening "Sonny, Please" was a tour de force, and it was an unexpected delight to hear "Strode Rode" with a haunting line by Clifton, and the same goes for "Sentimental Mood." I was particularly moved by the quick version of "Nice Lady," with Sonny and Clifton huddled close together at center stage for the theme, and then Sonny breaking off to take an ecstatically joyful, earthy solo.

My wife and I just returned from a week-end trip to Toronto, Ontario to attend your concert at the Four Seasons Opera House. We truly loved the performance of all, but your's especially (as usual.) Back in the late 60's I attended NYCOM and Kenny Dorham who was also a student there and I became good friends, he also acted as my musical mentor for I am also a trumpeter. We remained good friends until his premature demise. Quite recently I was surprised to be contacted by his daughter Evette: bluebossa135@yahoo.com
she somehow learned of our relationship and wanted to talk about her dad. We spent a few hours on the phone and we both learned about a KD we never knew. It was a wonderful chat. She mentioned that at their home in Brooklyn there was a downstairs music room that was off limits to her and the other children and included you in the list of players that might be down there working things out. I thought you might like this bit of nostalgia. As a player it goes without saying that I am a big fan/student of your music. Keep it going Mr. Rollins.

Sorry I don't have any of the first-hand experiences to rave about, but I would like to take the opportunity to thank you for your music. "St. Thomas" was a song my father whistled while fishing for a living, and turned out to be the first song I learned in my 2 years of playing bass. A group has picked me up and we now are possibly the only jazz outfit (Sax, trumpet, bass, drums, piano, percussion) here in the Virgin Islands (UK). Our next concert is August 4th at the college's classical auditorium, and we have a myspace page which has a clip of our very first concert last year July. Hope to see you at the concert in August! What would we need to do to get you here to see your long lost cousins?

Just revisited "Sonny Meets Hawk" & recently got Joshua Redman's "Back East,' which I'm sure is a tribute to "Way Out West." Is it possible that Joshua will meet Sonny?

I wanted to say thank you to Sonny, Clifton and the entire band for a wonderful set on Sunday night at UT. I drove in from Houston and met a friend for the show. We were both impressed by the power and beauty of Sonny's playing and by how well the ensemble worked together. The drumming too was notable. Finally, the pacing of the show was just fantastic. This was a night we will look remember. Come back to Texas soon!

I am still radiating from your performance Sunday night. I can die now-I met my hero. Life doesn't get much better than this. I was honored to meet you in the green room after the show. Please enjoy the yoga mat and yogi tea. I will think of you when I do yoga and sip tea. I am listening to Saxophone Colossus as I write this. After your interview with KLRU I ran across campus, took my statistics final exam and got an A in the class. I love you. You are a daily part of my life and continue to be an inspiration to me.

My wife Erika and I just saw you in Austin, TX the other day and just wanted to let you know how phenomenal you are. "My one and only love" put brought tears to my eyes and your singing of the blues was awesome! You've brought much inspiration and I've admired your music for many years. Thank you for taking the time after the show to meet with us and the rest of your fans outside after the show. It was truly appreciated and I was just honored to shake your hand.
