It's good to be back in Santa Barbara. We've been here a few times so we're familiar with the area. Like where to find a Trader Joe's. Our travel agent is based in Santa Barbara as well so we have friends in town. On our first night here the band went out with the two Janet's from our travel agent to Brophy's, a great seafood restaurant down by the water.
The concert was another great performance to a sold out Campbell Hall at UCSB. We tried a new stage setup again and we'll see how it works out. Sonny started off with a powerful Sonny, Please and tied things up with the classic Tenor Madness. He also threw in HS which I haven't heard in a while. I thought the band sounded great with this setup. We'll have to see how they feel.
Fortunately we have a day off in Santa Barbara so most of us will head down to state street to wander around. Then we are off by bus to Costa Mesa.

Sonny:
Thank you for an outstanding performance last Thursday, April 30, at the Segerstrom Concert Hall in Costa Mesa. It was probably the nicest place that I have been privileged to see you in; a spectacular new facility with outstanding acoustics. Hopefully you enjoyed performing there as much as I enjoyed listening.
Most of the tunes that you played sounded familiar to me, having been a fan of your music for many years. Unfortunately, I cannot place the names of the songs and would like to request that you post a set list of the performance so that I can dig out the appropriate CDs and reminisce. I thought that it added a nice touch when Peter Downey posted the set lists last year and would appreciate seeing that practice resumed.
Thanks and regards,
Chris

There is no way that you can use the same saxophone for more than one song! When I listen to Sonny Rollins, I imagine a pile of twisted brass behind him as he's handed a fresh sax to hang on his neck strap for the next song. Respect.

The Sonny Rollins 2009 tour kicked off on Wednesday, April 15 in Fayetteville, AR for Sonny Rollins first appearance ever in Northwest Arkansas. After delays out of LaGuardia we all finally made it to Fayetteville to find some fantastic weather.
The Walton Arts Center is a very nice venue with a fantastic staff. Sonny even had the opportunity to attend a reception prior to the concert to meet some of the benefactors.
The energy level of the concert kept rising until the last song of the second set ending with Don't Stop the Carnival and the audience on their feet. We were told prior to the concert that some members of the audience did not know who Sonny Rollins was but came because they heard the music would be amazing. I'm sure there are some new Jazz aficionados in Fayetteville after that concert.
This spring welcomes back Victor Y. See Yuen on percussion. Victor performed with Sonny back in the 90's but hasn't had a chance to perform with the band since 1999 as he worked on his own projects. Victor brings with him a special island feel in his playing drawing on his former home of Trinidad.
We're off to Miami for some heat before we head back to New York for a few days.
See you in Miami.

Hello Sonny
First of all I want to say I LOVE YOU!!!I am counting down the days until your concert at the University of Texas. I love your music and have been a fan for a long time. In fact, we studied about you in my Jazz Appreciation class last semester. You know you've "made it" when you are a question on a final exam.
Will you be available for meet and greet after the show? If you have seen "The Terminal" my version of Tom Hank's can of peanuts is my passport and would live to get your autograph.
I cannot wait to hear you live.
Namaste,

About Sonny’s playing before a live audience in 1959; very interesting:
It was New Year’s Eve 1959. Sonny Rollins was playing at the Red Rooster in Rochester. Five of us got in a car and drove through a snowstorm to go hear Sonny Rollins. It was Sonny with Frankie Dunlop on drums and Henry Grimes on bass, playing Be It Ever So Humble, There’s No Place Like Home; at a breakneck tempo, and he did it through all the keys, one chorus after the next. He must have done it about five or six times. He had the same proficiency and fluidity through all the keys. In the car, on the way home, I suddenly remembered why I wanted to play the tenor saxophone, and I had sold all my horns by then. When I got back to Buffalo at four or five in the morning,, Sunday morning, I called my teacher. I said, John, I need a saxophone. (Don Menza, Jazz Improv Magazine 8, 2006)

Dear Sonny,
I am a pianist by avocation.
I first became aware of you from the Amazing Bud Powell Vol 1. (I know his story and I wish Bud had lived long, but what an incredible human being for the time he had here).
I met you briefly backstage much later after your concert in 1990 at a high school in Allentown, PA - with Mark Soskin on Piano. That was the first time I'd seen you in concert and one of the most thrilling concerts I've ever seen in my life. Your improvisation was out of this world and the acoustics in that smaller venue were perfect to capture your sound.
I look forward to seeing you in Philadelphia again soon!!
All the Best and Good Health!

Hi Sonny, I saw you in concert in Singapore last year and I am so grateful that you came. I am in my 30's and I had been listening to your recordings since 12yrs old and never stopped loving it. You are my absolute favourite jazz artist along with Sonny Stitt, Johnny Hartman, Ahmad Jamal, Charlie Parker etc. Sitting on the second row from stage, I just couldn't stop weeping at your concert in Singapore last yr when you played tunes that reminds me of that classic album made by Hartman and Coltraned together. Tunes like "My One and Only Love". I was so tempted to request your tune "MANGO" while I was at the audience...Always adores that tune and that same vinyl I have. Am listening to you playing my favourite tune "Everything Happens To Me" on Sonny Rollins on Impulse album which I just bought today. You are absolutely the best and most inspiring musician Sonny! Thank you for coming to gig in Asia and I know it is no short plane ridde and I hope to see you gigging live again. It was one true amazing experience to see you and your fellow musos.

Chancing on this web site blows me away. My history with this music goes back 45 years or so. I knew nothing about jazz as a child. My uncle had some classic jazz LPs of the late '50s & early '60s, but he played only 3 records, day after day, two of which were The Bridge and Sonny Rollins Brass / Sonny Rollins Trio. I memorized every note of "Grand Street". Only as a teenager did I realize what I had stumbled on to, and started collecting other records, including classics like Saxophone Colossus. As an adult I saw Sonny perform in the Buffalo area, and in the past decade or so twice in DC, where, at his age, he was as vigorous and inspiring as ever. And now, in the Internet age, we can directly communicate with the distant heroes of your youth. Thank you Sonny, for all you have contributed to world culture!

Dear Sonny,
We are two of your biggest fans, and have Tenor Madness on heavy rotation. In fact, it inspired our favorite meal, TACO MADNESS, which we would love you to join us for if you are ever in the SF Bay Area. Hope to hear from you soon, and Happy New Year.

If one day it is discovered that life exist beyond this planet and we needed to have someone represent what music is from this world I would nominate you Mr. Rollins.
I hope you play in the New York area in 2009. I will be there tapping my feet.

Dear Mr. Rollins,
You are a brilliant musician. Thank you for all of the expressive solos and iconic jazz compositions.
I am working on a dissertation, and I am hoping you might be willing to entertain a couple of questions about your friendship with artist Gertrude Abercrombie and her friend, author James Purdy. I would really love to hear from you.

Hey Sonny! I am a huge fan, and I've loved your music since I first got into jazz when I was a teenager living in Albuquerque.
I read in the newspaper about a year ago that there was going to be an album release (possibly a double-album) of the discovered 50 year old tape of your Carnegie Hall concert in addition to the new 50th anniversary Carnegie Hall concert with Christian McBride and Roy Haynes. I've eargerly awaited this release, but I'm not sure if it's still coming out. I saw that the recent Road Shows Vol. 1 album has one track from the 50th anniversary Carnegie Hall concert, but will the entire concert (along with the original one from 50 years ago) be released on CD in their entirety?
Sincerely and with much love and respect,
Justin David Thomas

Dear Mr. Rollins,
what a great concert in Berlin!
Specially your solo in "Sonny, please" was spectacular. You´ve played with such a physical and mental strength, energy and honesty, everything what the musicscene and the world really need.
I feel so glad and it was (and still will be) the greatest honor for me to had the chance to meet you. Thank you again for your music and your patience after such a "tour de force"-concert.
Best regards to Peter Downey, he was very kind and the members of your band and Bret Primack of course
Please relax and recover after such a heavy tour, have a good time and merry christmas!!!
All the best, lol David
